He works as a senior news editor for a vernacular daily and has bagged an opportunity to write dialogues for Rajendra Prasad starrer Onamalu. Khadeer Babu more known as a short story writer knew that one day he would contribute stories for movies but he never imagined once that he would be asked to write dialogues.
He quips, "I just started writing, I had no technique or method and I was used only to narrating but not writing like an exercise, it was a free wheeling style and I winded it up in 15 days. Producer Sathyam read my book Darga Mitta Kathalu and was impressed and felt that I would be able to do a good job of writing dialogues for this movie."
Khadeer Babu had written 50 short stories and 15 full-length stories and they include books on cinema and music as well. He hails from Kavali in Nellore and grew up listening to tales from his grandma and developed a fetish to read and narrate. Though his financial background restrained him from exploring literature he got to lay hands on many books possible when he moved to Hyderabad.
He adds, "I came from a poor Muslim family and getting educated itself was a big achievement, how would I even have access to libraries et al? Luckily this inadequacy to satiate my thirst for reading books turned to a huge intensity and a craving to learn. Darga Mitta Kathalu is not fiction, it is about my childhood experiences."
A BSc in Computer Science, he became a journalist only because he thought he would get his compilations published. He smiles, "It took a while to realise that writings get published not if you are a journalist but only if you write well. Onamalu is completely a writer's film, the director gave us a fantastic script and I found it challenging to develop it especially the climax, the last fifteen minutes.
The best part of the film is the subject, we keep forgetting little things in our life, to remind ourselves of those sweet memories be it a kid in a school uniform, a big tree, the village, a phone call, etc; The entire process of recollecting of events by the protagonist as he revisits his village is the story."
Khadeer says he uses two styles of writing one, the Chaplinesque method and other a serious short story style and adds that one doesn't write well just because he happens to read many books. The person must have in him the mettle or you should have assimilated so much experience that you have seen or heard of other's life in order to write it interestingly.
